Housing in France and CAF Housing Aid for Newcomers

Rent is the biggest cost for most newcomers in France, but France is also unusual in offering housing aid, through CAF, that foreign students and workers with legal residence can genuinely receive. Understanding the garant system and preparing the right documents for CAF can be worth over a hundred euros every month.

Quick checklist

  • Decide between university housing (CROUS), private student residences and the open rental market.
  • Arrange a garant or use a state-backed guarantee like Visale before viewing apartments.
  • Prepare your rental file in advance: ID, proof of enrollment or work, funds proof, garant documents.
  • After moving in, apply to CAF online as soon as you have a lease, RIB and validated residence status.
  • Have your birth certificate with a sworn French translation ready; it is the document that blocks most CAF files.
  • Expect housing aid to start from the month after your application, not retroactively from moving in.

How renting works and what a garant is

French landlords usually require a garant, a person or institution that guarantees your rent if you cannot pay. Newcomers rarely have a French garant, so the state-backed Visale guarantee, available free for students and many young workers, fills this role and is widely accepted. Student options include CROUS university residences, which are cheap but oversubscribed, and private student residences, which cost more but accept international files more easily. Rental files move fast in big cities, so have every document scanned and ready before viewings.

What CAF housing aid is and who can get it

CAF (Caisse d'Allocations Familiales) pays monthly housing assistance, commonly called APL, based on your rent, income and situation. Foreign students and workers qualify if they have legal residence status, a lease in their own name and a French bank account. The aid is paid by bank transfer, generally from the second month of your tenancy onward, and for many students it covers a meaningful share of rent, so apply as soon as your paperwork allows rather than months later.

The documents that block CAF applications

Most stuck CAF files come down to the same items: a birth certificate without an accepted French translation, a missing or unvalidated residence status, or a lease and RIB with mismatched names. CAF generally requires the translation to be done by a sworn translator recognized in France, not an agency stamp from home. Upload clean scans, respond quickly to document requests in your online CAF account, and expect the first payment a few weeks after the file is complete.

Common questions

Housing & CAF FAQs

Can international students really get CAF housing aid?

Yes. Housing aid is not restricted to French citizens. Students with a validated VLS-TS or residence permit, a lease in their name and a French bank account regularly receive it. The amount depends on rent, city and income, and simulators on the CAF website give an estimate before you apply.

What is Visale and do landlords accept it?

Visale is a free state-backed rent guarantee for students and eligible young workers that replaces a personal garant. Many landlords and almost all student residences accept it, though some private landlords in tight markets still prefer a French personal guarantor. Apply for Visale online before your housing search so the certificate is ready for your file.

When should I apply to CAF after moving in?

As soon as you have a signed lease, your RIB and your validated residence status. Aid generally starts from the month after application and is not paid retroactively for earlier months, so a late application is money permanently lost.
