France Work Visas: Talent Permit, Salarie Route and Post-Study Options

France hires non-EU workers mainly through the Talent residence permit for qualified roles, the standard salarie route where the employer gets a work authorization, and post-study permits for graduates of French institutions. Which route applies depends mostly on your salary level, qualifications and whether you already studied in France.

Quick checklist

  • Check whether your salary and qualifications fit the Talent permit before the standard salarie route.
  • Confirm the current salary threshold for your category on the official service-public or France-Visas pages.
  • Graduates: check eligibility for the job search / new business permit (APS or RECE) before your student permit expires.
  • Ask the employer who handles the work authorization step and how long their part takes.
  • Keep degree certificates and experience letters ready with certified translations.
  • Plan for a total timeline of roughly two to three months from signed offer to arrival in typical cases.

The Talent residence permit

The Talent permit (formerly passeport talent) is a multi-year residence permit for qualified employees, researchers, investors, company founders and artists. For the qualified employee category the salary must meet a fixed threshold, around 39,600 euros gross per year as of 2026, while the EU Blue Card category requires a higher salary, around 59,400 euros. Its main advantages are that it can be issued for up to four years, covers the family through an accompanying family permit, and does not require the employer to obtain a separate work authorization first.

The standard salarie route

If the job does not meet Talent permit conditions, the employer applies for a work authorization (autorisation de travail) before you apply for the visa. The employer may need to show the role was advertised and could not be filled locally, except for occupations on the shortage list (metiers en tension). This route is slower and more employer-dependent, so confirm early that the company has done it before and knows the process.

Post-study work options for graduates

Graduates of French institutions with at least a professional bachelor or master-level degree can apply for a job search and business creation permit, commonly called the APS or RECE, which gives 12 months to find work or start a business. Once you find a qualifying job, you switch to an employee or Talent permit; as of early 2026 the reference salary to switch to full employee status is roughly 2,700 euros gross per month. Deadlines are strict, so apply before your student permit expires.

Common questions

Work Visas FAQs

Do I need a job offer before applying for a France work visa?

For employee categories, yes: both the Talent qualified-employee route and the standard salarie route are based on a signed contract or binding offer from a French employer. Exceptions are founder, investor and job-search categories, which are based on your project or recent French degree instead of an offer.

What salary do I need for the France Talent permit?

The qualified employee category requires roughly 39,600 euros gross per year as of 2026, and the EU Blue Card requires roughly 59,400 euros. Thresholds are updated regularly, so confirm the current figure on the official service-public.fr or France-Visas pages before relying on an offer.

Can my spouse work in France if I hold a Talent permit?

Yes. The spouse of a Talent permit holder receives an accompanying family residence permit that allows work in France, which is one of the biggest practical advantages of the Talent route compared with standard work permits.
