UK Airport Arrival and Border Control Guide

Arriving in the UK is usually straightforward when your eVisa, passport, address and purpose are ready. The border process checks identity, immigration permission and whether your planned activity matches your visa conditions.

Quick checklist

  • Check your eVisa and passport details before your flight.
  • Keep your UK address, university or employer details easy to access.
  • Carry your decision letter, CAS or CoS details in your hand luggage.
  • Use eGates only if your passport and immigration status make you eligible.
  • Collect checked luggage before the customs channel.
  • Declare restricted goods, large cash amounts or anything you are unsure about.

Border control and questions

A border officer may ask why you are coming, where you will stay, how long you will remain and whether you understand your visa conditions. Students may be asked about their course and university; workers may be asked about the employer and start date. Keep answers short, accurate and consistent with your application.

eGates are not for everyone

UK eGates are available only to eligible travellers with biometric passports and a valid digital immigration status or exemption. Some passport nationalities can use them, while others must see an officer. If the gate sends you to an officer, treat it as a normal check rather than a refusal.

Baggage, customs and onward travel

After border control, collect baggage and pass through the customs channel. Avoid carrying meat, dairy, many fresh foods, plants, seeds or commercial goods unless you have checked the rules. For onward travel, trains and coaches from London airports can be cheaper than taxis, but book enough time for immigration queues, luggage delays and terminal transfers.

Common questions

Airport Arrival FAQs

What questions do UK border officers ask?

Common questions cover your purpose, stay address, length of stay, funds and sponsor details. Students and workers should know their university, course, employer, role and start date.

Can Pakistani passport holders use UK eGates?

UK eGate eligibility depends on passport nationality, biometric passport requirements and digital status rules. Many Pakistani visitors should expect to see a border officer rather than use eGates, so follow airport signs and official instructions.

Should important documents be in checked luggage?

No. Keep your passport, decision notice, eVisa access details, CAS or CoS information, address and emergency contacts in hand luggage.
