How the points system works
The reformed SMC uses a simplified points scale where you need six points, combining a points-bearing factor, your qualification, occupational registration or NZ income level, with points for skilled work experience in New Zealand. A doctorate or professional registration carries more standalone weight than a bachelor degree, which must be topped up with more months of skilled NZ work. In practice, most applicants qualify by working in New Zealand on an AEWV for one to three years while their points accumulate.
